Ski and snowboard retailers often face the difficult task of evaluating whether or not they should expand or contract their product offerings and what brands they should offer. Making decisions more difficult is the apparel market is highly saturated with an abundance of brands and products.

To give ski and snowboard retailers a better idea of the brands being carried, along with their ratings for certain attributes for apparel, NSSRA conducted the NSSRA Brand Ratings – Apparel Survey in the summer of 2023. Whether an organization is an existing or start-up retailer, the resulting insights can aid in understanding the current landscape of the apparel market, including total sales vs. previous snow season, brands carried and how those brands measure up against others based on certain attributes. This report can also be used by manufacturers to get a better idea of where they stand with their retail customers.

NSSRA has prepared a special snow sports participation report based on the highly successful sports participation study executed annually by the National Sporting Goods Association. Conducted in 2023, the study measures the annual number of participants in snow sports activities and the frequency of participation during the calendar year 2022.

The report contains four sections, giving the reader a comprehensive picture of snow sports participation in the United States:

  • Section One delivers snapshots for a quick view of alpine skiing, cross country skiing, and snowboarding. The snapshots include: 10 year participation information (when available), 2022 frequency and participation by age, household income, and US region as well as cross participation information.

  • Section Two furnishes detailed tables providing participation information regarding: gender, age, education, presence of children  in household, household income, market size, US region, ethnicity/race, and frequency of participation.

  • Section Three includes detailed data identifying sports/recreational activities participated in by the same individual for alpine skiing and snowboarding participants.

  • Section Four classifies alpine skiing and snowboarding participant households in terms of several demographic characteristics and defines them in broad socioeconomic terms, providing a tool which can help understand consumer behavior.
